What can you do with a penny?

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the Samaritan Ministries Penny campaign. Our friend Doris, who helps us price yarn and assists us when we're short-handed, saves her change all year long for this event, so we're collecting in her honor.

You can visit the Samaritan Ministries website here to learn more about this wonderful organization. Did you know that 5 pounds of pennies equals $8.35 which equals 5 meals at the Soup Kitchen? The Samaritan volunteers know how to make those pennies go far!

There are two ways you can help us raise money for the Penny Campaign:
shop hop quilt
Shop Hop Quilt
First, our fun, fifties quilt from the shop hop will be raffled to benefit the Penny Campaign. The drawing will be held on December 10th. Raffle tickets are $1 per ticket or $5 for 6, $10 for 12 tickets.

Second, and this is the really fun part, we are sponsoring a friendly competition among our teachers. We will have jars near the front of the store labeled with each teacher's name. Vote for your favorite teacher with your pennies, nickles, dollars! There already seem to be several challenges brewing with this talented and loved group of women! We'll total the results on Saturday, December 10.

You can begin bringing in your donations Friday, November 25. We will conclude our collections on December 10 at our Holiday Open House. More details about the Open House will follow soon!

Scarf Time!

There's a chill in the air today and it looks like we're in for a beautiful fall weekend! Don't you need something to keep your (or your loved one's) neck warm?

Several years ago the eyelash scarf knitting craze was in full swing. Now the scarf-knitting trends are more diverse. Lots of beautiful scarves and cowls and shawls are knit with luxurious natural fibers and intricate pattern stitches...

But sometimes you need a quick scarf to make an outfit zippier or you need a quick gift (the holidays ARE approaching!).

My friend Matilda agreed to model some of the newest scarf yarns for fall. She's a great model--she doesn't talk back and she stands very still while I try to focus my camera--unlike my family who roll their eyes if I take too long trying to get the right shot!

Here Matilda is wearing our Black and Gold Special. Great for certain sporting events and elegant holiday parties. Made with one skein of Moda Lame` by Filatura de Crossa.

This scarf is made of the new Kidsilk Haze Creation. Kid mohair and silk make a luxurious but quick ruffled scarf that you can knit in an evening or less. Very soft and cozy! The pattern on the label calls for casting on 2 stitches, but I did three stitches, just to be different!

When you need a a REALLY quick scarf these two are are the Fastest!

The one on the left is Katia Aloha. The pattern is on the label. We call it the 15 Minute Scarf!

The turquoise scarf on the right is from Filatura di Crossa and we call it the 1 Minute Scarf!!! You work a crocheted chain stitch with your hand. what will they come up with next?

This scarf is made with Berocco Link. The pattern is on the label. The Berocco website has several other free patterns that can be make with this yarn.

For a more tailored look, Matilda likes this Herringbone neck warmer. The pattern was inspired by this free pattern, but we made ours with much bigger needles and thicker yarn. The shawl pins make a great accessory and easier than making buttonholes!

This ruffly neck warmer is made with Manos Silk blend and feels great up next to your neck. Martha has a trick for casting on the 300+ stitches that she'll share with you if you want to make one of these!!

Matilda has asked for a big, cozy cowl next. There are lots of free cowl patterns out in cyberspace! Martha is knitting a Stockholm cowl in Cascade Epiphany, but it is taking awhile. Jandell is making a Honey Cowl out of Cascade 220 Superwash. Or, maybe this easy and luscious Souffle cowl will be just the thing!

Happy Stitching,

Martha, Shirley, Susann, and Jandell

Christmas in August!

Most of you know that last week we marked the 15th anniversary(!) of Knit One Smock Too with a sale.
Thank goodness we did, because this week the UPS and FedEx workers delivered massive quantities of new, beautiful fall and winter yarns!
We hadn't see any of this yarn since it was ordered way back in the early spring, so each box held a "new" treasure!

This was the disaster scene Thursday morning after all the new yarn had been checked in and priced.
We moved much of the cotton yarns to the back half of the shop and began filling the shelves in the front section with the new stuff.

We quickly ran out of room, so we began filling the clearance table with more goodies. Don't wait too long to visit--there are some really nice skeins waiting to be snatched up by some savvy shopper!

Eventually all the beautiful new yarns found a place on the shelf and order (or as much order as we ever have!) is restored. Come see the latest patterns and feel the cushy new fibers for fall!

Happy stitching!

Retro fabric and a retro recipe

What does a creative person do when it's too hot even look outside? Plan a new project!!
I just finished my blue quilt (it's being quilted as we speak!!) and have almost finished piecing another one (I'll show you next week)...so of course its time to start another.

I just LOVE this vintage-y fabric from Piece O' Cake Designs and I've found a great appliqued quilt to go along with it. I ordered the pattern and I can hardly wait for the UPS man to deliver it!!

I've cut all my fabric plus enough for three more kits. See--I'm always thinking of you, too! I'm washing my fabric this weekend so that I can begin next week when the pattern arrives.

While my fabric is washing, I'll make this frozen salad of Shirley's. Jandell is making it for her salad supper party this weekend, so I'm going to make it to go with my pulled pork on Saturday night.

Shirley's Frozen Fruit Salad

1 Knox Gelatin packet
2 cups Sour Cream
¾ cup sugar
2 Tbls Lemon Juice
1-15 oz can crushed pineapple, drained
½ cup maraschino cherries--I have some fresh cherries that I might use instead.
1 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
3 diced bananas

Combine sour cream, sugar and lemon juice in a large bowl. Add gelatin and mix. Fold in remaining ingredients. Pour into muffin tins lined with cupcake papers. Freeze until firm. Remove from freezer 20 minutes before serving. makes 18 "muffins"

Happy stitching (and staying cool!)

Martha

Ripples

The Warren Jacket

Spring and Summer sweaters can be a challenge for our climate, but we often need something extra on our shoulders when in chilly air conditioned spaces. Any yarn that knits up quickly is usually too heavy, but not Ripple by Tahki. It is all cotton, drapey and knits to a worsted gauge.

This sweater is taking the country by storm!

We have the yarn and the pattern in stock now. Our knitting teachers Lisa and Jennifer are both making new garments. Jennifer is making the Warren Jacket and Lisa is using the Ripple yarn to make the Tessa Vest.

Come see us and check it out!

A Saturday at Home and a Tip for You!

The shop is closed today for the Easter Holiday. My plan was to be outside weeding flowerbeds and planting some herbs. I made those plans the other day when it was 80+ degrees and sunny. Today my computer says that it is 53 degrees and drizzly. Later the sun is supposed to come out, but until then I'm having fun in my sewing room!

Susann made this kit for my new quilt--yummy colors selected by Jandell and Shirley!

I'm working on a quilt for our booth at the Heart of the Triad Quilt Show--only three weeks away!!!

I'm also finishing up this dress for my Tea Towel Bishop class next Saturday morning!

Here's your tip, taught to me by Shirley: Before prewashing fabrics, always cut off the corners of each piece of fabric. I usually trim about a one inch wedge off each corner. No more knots of raveled, tangled, threads!

Enjoy the weekend!

A thing of beauty...

There's a beautiful new quilt hanging in the shop. It was made by a very talented group of women headed up by Jill Bowman and quilted by Theresa DeWalt. Wouldn't you love this covering your bed--I know it would look great on my four-poster!

This is the Raffle Quilt for the Heart of the Triad Quilt Guild Show. It's hanging in the shop right now and we have a big manilla envelope FULL of chances waiting for you! I heard that one of our quilt teachers bought A LOT of tickets. I'm off to get mine now while I decide what color to repaint my room...

Come see us!

Found Time and Sanity

My friend London saves me hours of time each week. Do you wonder how she performs this amazing feat, especially since I see her maybe once a week?

She has saved me much time and aggravation by making me one of these beautiful necklaces for my reading glasses. I put it on when I come to the shop each morning, and all day long I know where my "specs" are and I can see to inspect someone's smocking or knitting and read the tiny print of all those yarn labels and I have on a beautiful piece of jewelry. Amazing!

I love my necklace so much that London is now making these for you. They are so pretty, I'm thinking that maybe I need another one for my "sewing room" glasses!

She is now making custom necklaces for your Clover cutters. Come by and place your order.

Thanks, London!
